Should Teachers Roll Over Their 403(b) at Retirement?

5 min readBy Pauline Githara

Sometimes rolling your 403(b) to an IRA makes sense. Sometimes staying put is smarter. Here’s how to tell.

After a career of contributing, your 403(b) may be one of your largest savings buckets. At retirement, you have choices.

Reasons to consider rolling to an IRA - Lower fees or better fund options. - Simpler planning with fewer accounts to track. - More flexibility for Roth conversions and withdrawals.

Reasons to consider staying in the 403(b) - Access to a stable value or guaranteed-rate option that an IRA can’t replicate. - Specific provisions (separation-from-service, loans, or age-55 exceptions) that matter to your plan. - Avoiding the friction and paperwork of a rollover.

The quiet middle road Many households split: consolidate old 401(k)s and legacy IRAs, but keep the 403(b) in place for its unique features. The “correct” answer is rarely all-or-nothing.

Before you sign any paperwork, take 30 minutes to line up fees, withdrawal options, and beneficiary treatment side by side. If numbers make your eyes glaze over, that’s exactly when a second set of eyes helps most.
